Herb for July

MARSHMALLOW - Althea officinalis

The truly stunning marshmallow plant is loved by pollinators of all kinds due to its beautiful, soft, pink, open flowers. It can grow to be nearly 7ft tall with a 2-3ft diameter! The leaves are soft like rabbits’ ears as they are covered in tiny hairs which give them a silvery appearance and a velvety texture. Marshmallow has very long, thick pale roots which burrow deep underground. When the root is snapped it exudes a gel like substance called mucilage. The leaves, flowers and roots have all been used in traditional herbal medicine.
HABITAT
The marshmallow plant is native to Europe, western Asia and North Africa. It prefers marshy, damp areas and wet coastland but has adapted to become a versatile plant that will self-seed prolifically when it’s happy. In a garden it likes moist soil in a sunny spot.

DID YOU KNOW?
The name, Althea, comes from the Greek word although, which means ‘to heal’.

FAVORITE WAYS TO USE
All parts of marshmallow can be used; the young leaves, flowers and roots can all be eaten. In herbalism, it is usually the roots and leaves that are used in infusions or tinctures. The plant is used for its cooling and soothing effect, so it’s a great addition to body lotions and creams.
